ELMHURST, Ill. – The Centenary swimming team’s took both men’s and women’s Summit League Player of the Week awards. John Cefalu won the honor for the first time, while Maddie Wyatt received the award for the third time this season.

Cefalu claims the Male Athlete of the Week award after setting a pool record and notching a pair of season-best times en route to four first-place finishes over the weekend against Henderson State and in a dual meet at TCU. The junior from Slidell, La., helped the Gents set the pool record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.77 for a first-place finish. Cefalu came back to record a pair of season-best times in the 100 breast (59.57) and the 200 individual medley (1:56.89), winning both events. At TCU, he won the 100 breast with a time of 59.56.

“Cefalu is starting to come into his form, and we are excited about his accomplishment,” said head coach Butch Jordan. “The way he swam last week makes me pretty optimistic, and it should make for a great conference meet.”

Wyatt earns Female Athlete of the Week accolades for the third time this season after breaking a pool record in the 200 individual medley. The freshman from Austin, Texas, notched a pair of first place finishes as she helped Centenary to a win against Henderson State. Wyatt recorded a pair of season-best times in the 100 free (53.83) and the 200 individual medley (2:10.47). Her 200 individual medley time is the second fastest in Centenary history.

“Maddie has been strong and has worked hard all year long,” Jordan said. “She wasn’t even healthy for the meets over the weekend, which makes me think she is going to be great at conference.”

The Ladies and Gents next action will be Feb. 19-21 at the conference championship in Rochester, Mich.
