Nicholls Stymies Ladies on Sunday
Sunday, February 8, 2009

SHREVEPORT – Sophomore Caitlin Cavarra drove in two runs for the Centenary softball team, but the Ladies couldn’t draw anymore offense in a 4-2 extra inning loss to Nicholls State on Sunday afternoon.

In Centenary’s second inning, it looked as though big things were going to happen with bases loaded and one out. However, NSU made a pitching change to Audrey Wood, and the Ladies couldn’t figure her out, as they never got on base with a hit after.

Four times in the ball game Centenary went down 1-2-3, and the fourth and eighth innings proved to be the Ladies best chances to score.

In the fourth, freshman Kalyn Harris started the inning off with a walk, while in the eighth, sophomore Bonnie Matak began the frame on second due to international extra inning rules. However, neither time Centenary could do any damage against Wood.

Pitching for Centenary was Jessica Bock, who went three innings, allowing three hits and two runs, while fanning three. Hillary Phillips, (2-1), meanwhile, went five, scattered seven hits, two runs and striking out three.

The Ladies will next be in action on Friday at the ULM Mardi Gras Tournament against Central Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. Centenary will then return to the field Saturday against Southeast Missouri and Louisiana-Monroe.
