Ladies Close Mardi Gras Tournament With Win

MONROE, La. – Two RBIs by Vicki Honeycutt and a pair of two-run innings helped give the Centenary softball team a 6-1 victory over Louisiana-Monroe in the final game of the Mardi Gras Tournament.

Knocking in the first two runs for the Ladies was junior Haley Bassett and freshman Katie Matthews. Honeycutt, meanwhile, drove in both of her runs in the fifth on a double down the line, which gave Centenary a 5-0 lead.

After giving up a run in the bottom half of the fifth, Centenary shut the door on ULM with homer by Lindsey Smith.

Pitching for Centenary was freshman Hillary Phillips, who went seven innings, scattered five hits, allowed one run and struck out seven. Her counterparts, Kandace Causey and Heather Fritz combined to allow 10 his, six earned runs and six walks.

After the game it was announced Caitlin Cavarra was named tournament MVP, while Allison Shepperd, Jessica Bock and Katie Matthews were named to the all-tournament team.

Up next for Centenary will be a game at Grambling on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and then a home match-up with ULM at 5:30 p.m. The game against the Warhawks will be heard on www.GoCentenary.com.
