Matthews Named Summit League Hitter of the Week
Monday, February 16, 2009

ELMHURST, Ill. – For the second consecutive week the Centenary softball team has received The Summit League’s top weekly honor, as freshman Katie Matthews was named Hitter of the Week.

Matthews helped the Ladies win the ULM Mardi Gras Tournament after going 3-1.  The freshman from The Woodlands, Texas, belted her first collegiate home run against SEMO and scored the winning run versus Central Arkansas.  Matthews hit .538 (7-for-13) over the weekend, scoring four runs and driving in three.  Her RBI in the first inning against Louisiana-Monroe was the winning run as it proved to be the difference. At the conclusion of the tournament, Matthews was named to the all-tournament team.

“I wanted to prove to the team as freshman that I can play a key role this year,” said Matthews. “I also think that we need to go out as a team and get the job done every game and win conference.”

Centenary will have two games this week, as it travels east on I-20 to play Grambling on Tuesday and then ULM comes to Shreveport on Wednesday. The game against the Warhawks will be broadcast on www.GoCentenary.com.
