ELMHURST, ILL.-According to a vote by the league's 10 head coaches, the Centenary women's soccer team was picked to finish ninth in The Summit League in the recent preseason poll.

Centenary returns 17 from last season including top scorer, forward Katie Valdez, who connected on five goals and 12 points. The Ladies will also return both goal keepers, Kate Donnelly and Deb Hill. Hill was honored as a Summit League Player of the Week in 2008. The Ladies welcome 10 newcomers to the 2009 squad.

A Centenary team that finished in ninth place last season with a 1-7-0 record in conference play and a 3-14-1 overall record under Head Coach Chase Wooten was picked to finish just ahead of soccer newcomer UMKC.

Oakland was chosen to finish first after receiving two first-place votes for a total of 72 points. Behind the Golden Grizzlies was South Dakota State, who garnered two first-place votes and 66 total points for second place. Rounding out the top four was IUPUI with four first-place votes, but only 65 points and North Dakota State with one first-place vote and 59 points.

Western Illinois (fifth), Southern Utah (sixth), Oral Roberts (seventh), IPFW (eighth), Centenary (ninth) and UMKC (tenth) complete the final preseason poll as they were voted fifth through tenth, respectively.

"We have a lot to prove. We were so close in multiple games last season, but we were missing the final piece to the puzzle. I think we have it now. Hopefully by the end of the season, we are making a run in The Summit League," said Wooten.

The Ladies opened preseason practice this week and will take the field against Letourneau at the end of August.
