Saturday, August 29, 2009
RUSTON, La.-The Centenary volleyball team fell to Tennessee-Martin, 3-0 (25-17, 25-7, 25-16) and South Alabama, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) on Day One of the 2009 Lady Techster Invitational hosted by Louisiana Tech.

The Ladies (0-2) opened up each contest with strong play, but struggled to find a way to pull off the win in the opening day of the season.

Centenary jumped ahead in set one, 2-0 on a kill by freshman Mackenzie Hubbard and a Tennessee-Martin attack error. The Ladies extended their lead, 8-4 before allowing the Skyhawks to tie it at 11-11 midway through the set. Each team battled back-and-forth before Tennessee-Martin took advantage of Centenary's errors to win set one, 25-17.

In set two, the Ladies again went up 2-0, but the Skyhawks were too strong, allowing Centenary to get as close as 6-4 before breaking the set open. The Ladies had 10 errors to Tennessee-Martin's two.

The final set ended in favor of the Skyhawks despite a fairly close set. Centenary had 10 kills, while Tennessee-Martin had 13.

The Ladies were led by sophomore Jennifer Kunze with eight kills in the contest. Freshman Christina Fellows paced the Ladies with 17 assists, while junior Bethany Kern had 11 digs. Tennessee-Martin totaled 12.0 team blocks to Centenary's two.

Against South Alabama, Kunze recorded back-to-back service aces to give the Ladies a 3-1 edge, but several Centenary attack errors allowed the Jaguars to take the lead and hold on for the first game.

In the second set, South Alabama had 15 kills to Centenary's six. The Ladies trailed within one the entire game, but were challenged by the Jaguars, dropping set two, 25-22.

Despite allowing eight errors by South Alabama, the Ladies gave up a 15-13 lead as the Jaguars scored seven times before Centenary had a chance to recover.

For the match, Centenary was led by Kunze with seven kills and 11 digs, while Fellows had 17 assists.

The Ladies will continue play on Saturday when they take on Louisiana Tech at 12 p.m. and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 5 p.m.
