Ladies Battle, but Fall Twice at Drake Invitational

DES MOINES, Iowa-The Centenary volleyball team battled South Dakota and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the opening day of the Hampton Inn Drake Invitational on Friday. The Ladies dropped both matches 3-1.

Centenary (1-5) met up with South Dakota, finishing with set scores of 26-24, 20-25, 10-25, 15-25, followed by a 3-1 loss to A&M-Corpus Christi, 18-25, 19-25, 25-9, 13-25.

In the first match of the day, the Ladies went up 5-0 before allowing South Dakota to respond. A complete 16-kill effort in the first set led to a 26-24 Centenary advantage. What proved to be another exciting matchup in game two ended in a 25-20 fall for the Ladies, who ended up dropping the final three sets to lose, 3-1 to the Coyotes.

On the match, sophomore Jennifer Kunze led the way offensively with 10 kills and 33 total attacks. Sophomore Jaclyn Lopez and freshman Christina Fellows each notched 18 and 13 assists, respectively for a team-best against South Dakota. Defensively, the Ladies were led by junior Bethany Kern who had 17 digs, just ahead of sophomore sister, Brianna Kern, who had 15.

As a team, Centenary had a total of 38 kills to South Dakota's 43 in four sets played. The Coyotes out attacked the Ladies with a .248 to .059 clip.

Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Centenary went up 3-0 on back-to-back service aces by Lopez and an attack error, but couldn't hold on to an early lead, falling 25-18. The second set was impressive on both ends as each team posted quality attack numbers. The Islanders finished with 15 kills for a .400 attack percentage, while the Ladies had 16 kills and a .324 average, dropping set two.

Down 2-0, Centenary made a showing in the third set of the match as A&M-Corpus Christi committed 12 errors to the Ladies' two for a 25-9 finish, pushing a fourth set. The final game, however, ended in favor of the Islanders as Centenary struggled offensively with five kills and 10 errors.

For the match, the Ladies were led by Kunze and sophomore Stevie Hurlbirt with 10 kills each. Lopez had a team-high 27 assists. Kunze had eight digs, followed by Bethany Kern and Fellows with seven.

Centenary, as a squad, had 38 total kills to the Islanders' 46.The Ladies finished with 33 digs compared to A&M-Corpus Christi's 44.

More action is to come as the Ladies take on Valparaiso at 3:30 p.m. and Drake at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the final day of the Hampton Inn Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa.
