Errors Proved Costly for Ladies on Final Day at Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa-On the final day of the Hampton Inn Drake Invitational, the Centenary volleyball team dropped both matches to Valparaiso and Drake on Saturday.

The Ladies (1-7) fell in each match, 3-0, to fall to 1-7 on the season.

In the first match against Valpo, Centenary struggled offensively as they lost 25-11, 25-16, 25-17. The Ladies committed 11 errors and had just eight kills in the opening set, while the Crusaders finished with 10 kills and only one error.

The second and third sets remained in control by Valpo as Centenary couldn't overcome their mistakes and early leads by the Crusaders.

The Ladies were offensively by sophomore Jennifer Kunze with six kills and sophomore Jaclyn Lopez with 21 assists. Freshman Christina Fellows tallied a team-best 12 digs, followed by sophomore Stevie Hurlbirt and junior Bethany Kern with 11 each.

As a team, Centenary had 25 kills, but committed 29 errors for a -.030 attack percentage compared to Valpo's .238 percentage.

In the final match of the tournament, Centenary faced host-Drake, but fell in all three sets. Again, the Ladies found themselves down due to early errors.

Against Drake, freshmen Blair Claypoole and Mackenzie Hubbard each had five kills to lead the Ladies. Lopez had 14 assists, while Kunze tallied 11 digs.

Centenary had 23 kills to Drake's 43 and committed 25 errors to just 11 on the match.

The Ladies will begin Summit League play on Friday, Sept. 11 at South Dakota State beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. match start against North Dakota State on Saturday.
