Ladies Edge UT-Brownsville, 4-3, Valdez Scores Twice

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary women's soccer team notched a 4-3 win in non-conference play, edging University of Texas-Brownsville on Sunday afternoon for the fourth win of the season at Mayo Field.

The Ladies (4-0-0) didn't waste anytime scoring as sophomore forward Katie Valdez put Centenary up 1-0 on an assist by senior Kristine Weaver at the 3:13 mark.

UT-Brownsville (0-1-1) tied the game nearly a minute later on a shot by Chelsea Maidment that found the back of the net from the outside box.

Valdez then broke the score open on her second goal of the game, as she went one-on-one with the keeper at 5:48.

Scorpion Helen Wagstaff had an unassisted shot at the 12-minute mark that tied the game back at 2-2, heading into halftime.

Coming out in the second half, Weaver found net on a shot that reached the far left corner from Valdez. At 67 minutes into the game, freshman Allison Rucinski extended the Ladies lead to 4-2 on a deep shot that reached the far left corner off an assist by sophomore Chelsea Granger.

With five minutes remaining in the game, UT-Brownsville was awarded a penalty kick that led to a goal by Jodie Hunter, making it a 4-3 game.

Centenary was able to hold on to their early lead and secure the win. Senior goal keeper Kate Donnelly played the first half, tallying three saves, while sophomore Deb Hill was in goal the final 45 minutes with four saves.

As a team, the Ladies had 23 total shots to the Scorpions 18.

Centenary will be back in action on Tuesday as it host Mississippi Valley State in a 6:00 p.m. start time at Mayo Field.
