Volleyball Set to Open League Play

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary women's volleyball team will open Summit League play this weekend as it travels to South Dakota State on Friday and North Dakota State on Saturday.

The Ladies (1-7, 0-0 Summit) will meet the Jackrabbits of SDSU in a 7 p.m. start, followed by the Bison of NDSU at 7p.m. as well, the following evening.

Centenary begins Summit League play having dropped its last four matches at the Drake Invitational last weekend. The Ladies took a 3-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff the previous weekend for the only win of the season thus far.

Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Kunze leads the Ladies with 2.56 kills per set and is second defensively with 2.80 digs per set. Junior libero Bethany Kern leads the team with 3.54 digs per set, and sophomore setter/outside hitter Jaclyn Lopez leads the team with 13 service aces.

South Dakota State enters the match with a 1-5 record on the season, having dropped its last contest to Central Michigan, 3-0. The only win for the Jackrabbits came on August 29 against Rutgers.

Leading the way for SDSU is Kelli Fiegen with 3.21 kills per set and 19 blocks. Nicole Peters paces the Jackrabbits with 7.15 assists per set, while Stacey Wernert leads the squad with 3.29 digs per set.

North Dakota will play host to Oral Roberts prior to the match with Centenary. The Bison begin the weekend with a 4-2 record, having won their last contest against Eastern Michigan, 3-1 to take second place at the Northern Colorado Classic.

Reigning Summit League Player of the Year, Chrissy Knuth leads the Bison with 3.39 kills per set and 23 blocks. Jennifer Lopez has a team-best 5.16 assists per set and 12service aces, while Kelly Lopez leads NDSU with 91 digs.

Following this weekend's matches, the Ladies will play its first home game of the season against Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m. in the Gold Dome.
