Early Goal Clinches Win for Ladies
Saturday, September 26, 2009
SHREVEPORT-Senior Kristine Weaver found the back of the net to give the Centenary women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Houston Baptist on Friday evening.

The Ladies improved to 7-1 on the season and 6-0 at home with the win.

It didn't take long for Centenary to challenge the Huskies, as sophomore Katie Valdez put up the first shot, just under three minutes into the game, but the shot was saved by the HBU keeper.

Five minutes later, Weaver fired a shot from freshman Hisa Turner that reached net, giving the Ladies an early 1-0 lead.

The goal proved to be an important one as neither team was able to reach net the remainder of the half.

In the second half, HBU had a chance to tie the game on six shots, but two were saved by sophomore keeper Deb Hill, as two were wide, one was high and one was blocked.

After that attack, Centenary had three shots on goal, two by Valdez and one by sophomore Chelsea Granger, but all three were saved. HBU made the final five minutes interesting, as the Huskies challenged Hill with two shots, but she held on for two late saves.

Centenary fired off 12 shots, six in each half. Valdez had three shots, all on goal, while Granger tallied two on goal.

Hill remained in goal the entire match, earning eight saves, while HBU keeper Michelle Rich had six saves and one goal scored.

The Ladies will take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
