Ladies Fall in Summit League Opener, 1-0

SHREVEPORT-In its Summit League opener, the Centenary women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to South Dakota State on Friday evening on Mayo Field.

The Ladies (8-2, 0-1 Summit) were held scoreless in 90 minutes of play to fall in their first home game of the season.

Centenary battled the Jackrabbits to a 0-0 tie in the first half. The Ladies' best chance of netting goal came on back-to-back shots at the 39-minute mark when freshman Kelly Fossard sent a strong shot towards goal that was saved by SDSU keeper Dani Pappas.

Following Fossard's attempt was a shot by classmate Hisa Turner that was also saved in  goal, preventing the Ladies from taking a first half lead.

It remained anyone's game heading into halftime.

South Dakota State's Tory Schiltgen put up a shot that hit off the post at 69 minutes. Rebounding the shot was teammate Danni Healy, who found the back of the net to put the Jackrabbits up 1-0 at 69:14.

Centenary was only able to manage one shot in the final 20 minutes that went high by junior Catie Depew.

Sophomore keeper Deb Hill played all 90 minutes in goal, garnering six saves.

As a team, the Ladies put up six shots to SDSU's 24. Centenary was led by sophomore Katie Valdez and Fossard with two shots each, while freshman Holden Penney and Turner put up one.

Centenary will take on North Dakota State in Summit League action on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Mayo Field.
