Saturday, October 10, 2009
SHREVEPORT-Sophomore Brianna Kern notched a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs, but it wasn't enough as the Centenary volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to Southern Utah on Friday evening in Summit League action.

The Ladies (3-15, 0-8 Summit) dropped set one, 26-24, but rebounded back to win set two, 25-20, though a strong Thunderbird (5-12, 3-5 Summit) surge gave them set three (25-19) and set four (25-21).

Southern Utah took an early 2-0 lead in set one, but three attack errors and a Kern kill put Centenary up 4-2. Though, the Thunderbirds didn't allow the Ladies to extend the deficit, responding on two Ladies' errors, along with two kills to pull ahead 6-4.

From then on, the set played as a battle until the finish. A kill by freshman Shelby Singleton gave Centenary a lead midway through the set. The Ladies were able to control the lead with a chance to win with a 24-23 lead, but Southern Utah finished with three final kills to win set one.

Set two wasn't in the Ladies' favor at the beginning as they went down 3-0 on two early attack errors. But remaining strong throughout the set, freshman Blair Claypoole controlled the offensive threat with eight straight serves to produce a late 8-0 run.

During that run, the Ladies used five Southern Utah errors and three kills by freshmen Mackenzie Hubbard and Christina Fellows for a second set win.

In set three, Centenary had to battle its way back to make the set a close one as it fell down early.

The Ladies got within three of the Thunderbirds at 11-8, but they then followed with three straight errors to allow Southern Utah to gain its early lead again.

From the beginning, set four proved to be a competitive set until the very end. In the early part of the set, the Ladies took over the lead five different times. Centenary held onto the lead for nine straight possessions, but a Southern Utah kill tied it back up at 13-13.

With a 20-19 lead, Southern Utah evened the score on a kill. Four straight points at the end gave the Thunderbirds a 23-20 advantage, ultimately sealing the match.

As a team, Centenary tallied 47 kills and 51 digs to Southern Utah's 56 kills and 47 digs. The Ladies were led by Singleton with 13 and Hubbard and Kern with 10 apiece. Lopez had a team-high 38 assists and 12 digs, while junior Bethany Kern had 11 digs.

The Ladies will take on UMKC at 3:00 pm on Sunday in the Gold Dome.
