Sunday, October 18, 2009
FORT WAYNE, Ind.-The Centenary women's soccer team used two second-half goals to defeat IPFW, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Summit League play.

The Ladies (9-3-1, 1-2-1 Summit) won its first league match of the season to improve to 9-3-1 overall.

IPFW attempted 11 first-half shots, while Centenary had two, but neither team could find the back of the net as a 0-0 tie moved into an exciting final 45 minutes of play.

The Ladies struck first when sophomore Chelsea Granger received the ball from classmate Katie Valdez in the box then fired off a shot to the left side that put Centenary up 1-0 at 68:40.

Nearly three minutes later, Valdez added her name to the scoring column when she dribbled from mid-field and sent a shot past a charging keeper, giving the Ladies a 2-0 advantage with less than 20 minutes to play.

Centenary held on strong to their late lead, but the Mastodons didn't let up as Lisa Underwood netted goal off a corner kick that reached the net just past senior keeper Kate Donnelly at the 78-minute mark.

In goal, Donnelly made six saves, while IPFW goalie, Kristen McFadden saved four Ladies' shots.

The Ladies tallied nine shots with six being on goal. Valdez led with three, two on goal, one goal scored and one assist. Senior Lauren Stanley fired off two Centenary shots, while senior Lauren Cheaney, sophomores Granger and Ashley Dolezel, along with freshman Hisa Turner had a shot on goal.

Centenary will recognize its seniors in its next home match against Western Illinois this Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Mayo Field.
