Saturday, October 24, 2009
FORT WAYNE, Ind.-Sophomore Brianna Kern recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs, but it wasn't enough as the Centenary women's volleyball team dropped three straight matches to IPFW on Friday evening.

The Ladies (4-17, 0-10 Summit) fell 25-16, 25-20, and 26-24 to the Mastodons.

Despite taking an early 2-0 lead, Centenary allowed IPFW to move ahead, 8-5 on three errors and a service ace. From that moment on, the Mastodons never trailed, taking set one.

In set two, the Ladies used a 4-0 run on three IPFW errors to go up 6-5. The Mastodons tied it at 8-8, but Centenary quickly responded with consecutive kills by Kern and two home errors for a 12-8 lead.

The Ladies were up 16-9, but struggled to hang on and close out the set. The Mastodons tallied seven straight points on five Centenary mistakes to tie the set at 16. For the final points, it was any team's set; though IPFW rallied with four points led by two service aces to win set two.

Set three was an even more competitive matchup as IPFW led 3-1 in the early going. Kills by freshmen Shelby Singleton, Blair Claypoole and Christina Fellows evened the set.

The Ladies trailed most of the way until a 4-0 run tied the score at 18 apiece. Two attack errors and two kills gave IPFW the late lead, though two Mastodon attack errors followed to put Centenary ahead 24-23.

It was two final mistakes and a match ending kill that sent the Ladies home empty handed.

Centenary tallied 29 kills led by Kern. IPFW garnered 36 on the match. Sophomore Jaclyn Lopez had a match high 24 assists. Kern and Fellows paced the defense with 10 digs each as Centenary had 38 to IPFW's 30.

Centenary will take on Oakland on Saturday evening at 7:00 pm.
