ST. GEORGE, Utah-Hopes stay alive as the Centenary women's soccer team used two early goals for a 2-1 win over Southern Utah on Thursday evening in Summit League play.

The Ladies (10-5-1, 2-4-1 Summit) reached the 10-win mark of the season on two goals by sophomore forward Katie Valdez. The match was moved to St. George, Utah, about 40 miles outside Cedar City, due to snowy field conditions.

Centenary managed to put up three early shots within the first 13 minutes, one by sophomore Chelsea Granger and two by Valdez, but all three were saved in goal.

It wasn't until a Southern Utah foul that gave the Ladies a free kick. Valdez took full advantage of the opportunity as she sent a laser to the top corner from the opposite side of the field to net her first goal of the night at the 13:53 mark.

Nearly seven minutes later, Valdez fired off a shot that reached an open net as the Thunderbird keeper came out to send the Ladies up 2-0.

Southern Utah narrowed the deficit to one when Amanda Lazcano scored on an assist by Kristen Fronk from 10 yards out to make it a 2-1 match heading into halftime.

Holding a small lead into the final half, senior Kate Donnelly came out strong, making three saves in goal to keep the Thunderbirds trailing.

Centenary wasn't able to get a second half shot off until Valdez attempted at 72:42, but was rejected.

Despite being outshot 19-14, the Ladies made 11 saves, nine by Donnelly and two by the team to secure the road win.

Valdez led with 11 shots, eight on goal, followed by Granger and freshmen Kelly Fossard and Morgan Ulliman with one shot on goal.

The Ladies will now travel to UMKC for 3:00 pm match start on Saturday.
