Ladies Fall in Five Set-1-20 Battle

RUSTON, La.-In non-conference action, the Centenary women's volleyball battled in-state rival Louisiana Tech to five sets, but fell 3-2 in the end on Tuesday evening.

The Ladies (4-23, 0-15 Summit) dropped set one, 25-17, but evened the match winning set two, 25-22. The Lady Techsters were able to ease past with a 25-20 set three win, before Centenary took set four, 26-24 to push a deciding set. Louisiana Tech found a way to pull off the competitive match with a 15-8 set five win.

Centenary managed to tally nine kills to its nine errors in set one for a .000 attack percentage. The score was tied at 16-16 then Louisiana Tech went on a late 5-0 run to go up 21-16.

Freshman Blair Claypoole ended the scoring threat on a kill, but the Lady Techsters finished with four straight points on three Ladies attack errors.

In much better fashion with 15 kills to out hit the Lady Techsters .196 to .111 in the second set, the Ladies took the set never trailing.

Though Louisiana Tech did find a way to narrow the early deficit to one at 16-15, but wasn't able to bring it any closer as sophomore Brianna Kern used two final kills to end the set.

Tied at 1-1, Centenary fell down 3-0 on two errors in the third set. After pulling within one, the Ladies allowed the Lady Techsters to tally four points to go up 9-4.

A 6-0 Centenary run on kills by sophomore Jaclyn Lopez, Kern and two by Claypoole, along with a service ace by junior libero Bethany Kern, the Ladies tied the set at 10-10. Though a battle until the end, Louisiana Tech was able to secure the lead and win.

In the fourth set, the Ladies played their best volleyball of the night with a .350 attack percentage, recording 18 kills to just four mistakes. The lead exchanged 15 times throughout the set. It remained a one-point set until freshmen Mackenzie Hubbard and Christina Fellows ended it with two strong kills.

Up 3-0 in the deciding set, the Ladies looked strong and were able to capitalize on the Lady Techsters' mistakes, however two service aces by the home team and two attack errors by Centenary gave Louisiana Tech a 5-3 lead.

Sophomore Jennifer Kunze tied the score at 7-7 on a kill, but a 4-0 run followed allowing the Lady Techsters to secure a solid lead. Two final attack errors by the Ladies gave way for a disappointing loss.

Kunze led Centenary with 17 kills, while Lopez had a match-high 49 assists and 20 digs.

The Ladies will be back in action on Friday when they host North Dakota State at 7:00 pm in the Gold Dome. Following that match, Centenary will host South Dakota State on Saturday at 5:00 pm and Oral Roberts on Monday at 5:00 pm to wrap up Summit League play.
