Ladies Split Day at Red & Blue Classic

OXFORD, Miss.-The Centenary softball team played two solid games on Day 2 of the Red & Blue Classic hosted by Ole Miss, taking Game 1 11-3 in five innings over Murray State, before falling in the afternoon contest  against Ole Miss, 8-3.

The Ladies pounded out 16 hits on Saturday after just four total on Day 1 to improve to 3-6 on the season.

Game 1: Centenary 11, Murray State 3 (5 innings)

Junior right-handed pitcher Sara Dornelas went the distance, tossing all 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits, while fanning three for the win.

At the plate, five Ladies had a multi-hit game as senior Haley Bassett (2x4, 2R, 2 RBI), junior Bonnie Matak (2x3, 3R), senior Allison Shepperd (2x4, 2R, 2 RBI), and sophomores Katie Matthews (2x3, R, 3 RBI) and Kalyn Harris (2x2, R, 3 RBI) each had two hits.

Matak and Shepperd each had singles in the first allowing Matthews to pick up two RBI on a double to right center. Murray State would respond with two hits in the latter part of the inning to narrow the lead 2-1.

However, the Ladies had a solid second frame, producing five runs on two early singles and a walk that set the table for Bassett's double that plated two. Shepperd picked up two RBI on a double down the left field line, while Harris plated a run with a single.

Murray State would make it a 7-3 game in the third on a two-run homer, but Centenary wouldn't surrender anymore the rest of the game it put together a four-run fourth on three hits, including a two-RBI triple by Harris to close out the game in five innings.

Game 2: Ole Miss 8, Centenary 3

Ole Miss would score one in the bottom of the first on a lead off triple followed by an RBI single.

Centenary responded quickly with two runs in the top of the second when Harris drew a lead off walk and Dornelas singled for junior Catlin Cavarra's double to plate two.

Holding Ole Miss scoreless in the bottom half, Centenary took a 3-1 lead when Matthews belted her first home run of the season. The Rebels would then take the lead at 4-3 on a lead off homerun, followed by a double and single.

Centenary was only able to pick up one more hit in the final four innings on a single by Salvatore, while Ole Miss plated one run in the fourth and three more in the sixth on one hit and consecutive Centenary errors.

Cavarra led the way offensively with a 2x3 performance, driving in two runs, while Matthews (1x3, R, RBI) homered and Dornelas (1x3, R) singled.

Suffering the loss on the mound for the Ladies was junior Courtney Avery (0-1) (1.0,3,3,3,0,0), tossing 1.0 inning in relief, allowing three earned runs on three hits.

Sophomore Regina Salvatore got the start (0.1,3,1,1,1,0) but was relieved after allowing a run and three hits. Dornelas (4.2,3,4,0,2,0) also saw action of 4.2 innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits.

Centenary will play its final game of the tournament on Sunday at Noon against Murray State.
