MONROE, La.-Despite pulling within one run in the top of the seventh, the Centenary softball team fell 4-3 to Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

The Ladies (8-11, 2-1 Summit) allowed the Warhawks to gain all four runs on three home runs, even though they out hit ULM, 8-5 on the evening. Centenary senior Allison Shepperd led the Ladies offensively, going 3x4 with a run scored and two RBI as all three hits were doubles.

Junior Sara Dornelas (2x3) had a multi-hit game, while senior Haley Bassett (1x3, R) and sophomores Kalyn Harris (1x2) and Katie Matthews (1x4, RBI) picked up a hit.

With two outs in the top of the first, Shepperd and Matthews hit back to back doubles to give Centenary a 1-0 lead.

Though, ULM would tie the game in the bottom of the second on a solo shot by Melissa Rivera.

Centenary had another chance to plate a run when Shepperd doubled for the second time in the third, but Matthew's hard line drive would result in a double play, allowing the Warhawks to escape without any Ladies damage.

ULM added two more runs in the latter half of the inning when a two-run home run by Roxane Cassel, giving the home team a 3-1 lead. Again, the Ladies made noise in the fourth when Harris and Dornelas would each reach on consecutive singles, but another double-play by the Warhawks stopped Centenary's attempt.

Cassel would homer for the second time of the night to lift ULM to a 4-1 lead in the home half of the fifth as Centenary was held scoreless in the sixth.

Down by three, junior Caitlin Cavarra would draw a leadoff walk, followed by a hit-by-pitch by Bassett. Senior Beth Krysiak entered as a pinch hitter, advancing Cavarra and Bassett on a groundout. With two outs, Shepperd belted another double, driving in two to trim the lead to one, 4-3, but ULM was able to get the final batter to strikeout.

Dornelas (4.0,4,3,3,2,1) would suffer the loss and fall to 7-8 on the season after tossing 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while fanning one.

Junior Lauren Highsmith (2.0,1,1,1,1,1) would throw 2.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on one hit with one strikeout.

ULM's Tiffany Mills (4.2,6,1,1,2,4) picked up the win after pitching 4.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits and four strikeouts.

Cassel led the Warhawks with two hits.

Centenary will host North Dakota State in Summit League play beginning on Friday in a double-header starting at 4:00 pm.
