Saturday, March 20, 2010
SHREVEPORT-Junior Bonnie Matak belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Centenary softball team dropped its final game of the weekend series on Saturday to North Dakota State, 11-3, in six innings.

The Ladies (8-14, 2-5 Summit) connected on just four hits in the afternoon contest as the Bison pounded out 11 and took advantage of two Centenary miscues. Leading the way offensively for the Ladies was Matak, going 1x3, while driving in two on her first long ball of the season. Junior Caitlin Cavarra (1x3, R), senior Allison Shepperd (1x2, R) and sophomore Katie Matthews (1x3) each had a hit.

Junior Sara Dornelas (4.1,6,5,5,2,2) got the start and suffered the loss after tossing 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits, while fanning two and walking two.

Centenary took the early lead when Shepperd doubled to left center with two outs. A stolen base and a throwing error by North Dakota State plated the senior to give the Ladies a 1-0 advantage.

The Bison would quickly respond in the top half of the second with a run on an RBI-double by Laurel Pipkin, scoring Richel Briones who got things going for North Dakota State with a double down left field line.

Dornelas was able hold the Bison scoreless in the third, but gave way to a two-run home run by Marissa McKenzie, sending the Bison up 3-1 in the fourth.

Junior Lauren Highsmith (1.0,2,4,3,3,0) entered in relief of Dornelas in the fifth. A walk was followed by an RBI-double and an infield single that plated a run on a throwing error by the Ladies.

Holding the Ladies without a run in the home half, the Bison exploded on six runs on four hits including a bases clearing double by Melissa Chmielewski in the sixth to go up 11-3. Highsmith, Dornelas and sophomore Reggie Salvatore (0.2,3,2,1,0,0) all saw action on the mound.

Cavarra would lead off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left field, allowing Matak to pick up two RBI on her home run.

NDSU's Whitney Johnson (6.0,4,3,3,2,6) went the distance and earned her third win of the weekend after tossing 6.0 innings,  allowing just three runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

Briones had three hits for the Bison.

Centenary will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts SFA at 5:30 pm.
