Ladies Blanked by IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind.-The Centenary softball team was held to just one hit on Friday afternoon as it dropped its first game of the three-game set with IPFW, 2-0, in Summit League play.

The Ladies (8-16, 2-5 Summit) got a hit from junior pitcher Sara Dornelas. The righty (6.0,4,2,2,4,3) also suffered the loss on the mound after tossing 6.0 complete innings allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Little activity occurred for both teams as IPFW and Centenary hitters each battled solid pitching performances from Ladies' starter Sara Dornelas and Mastodon starter Courtney Cronin.

Centenary would experience an active fourth for IPFW as they opened the frame with a double, followed by a groundout to advance the runner to third with one out. Dornelas would allow an infield single, but would get the final two batters to ground out, holding the Mastodons without a run.

The Ladies were held hitless until the fifth inning when Dornelas singled down the left field line. However, a fielder's choice and fly out ended any threat Centenary attempted to make.

It was the bottom of the fifth when IPFW would strike first. After a lead off single, Kristina Karpin belted a two-run home run to put the Mastodons up 2-0.

Centenary went down in order in the sixth and seventh after garnering just one hit on the game.

IPFW's Cronin (7.0,1,0,0,1,3) pitched a complete game shutout to earn the win, giving up one hit with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Ladies will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday with a double-header beginning at 10:30 am.
