NACOGDOCHES, Texas-The Centenary softball team plated three runs in the second inning to take a lead, but eventually fell 4-3 in nine innings to Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Ladies, (9-25) looking for their 10th win of the season fell short after an RBI-double in the ninth by the Ladyjacks sealed the win for the home team.

Junior Caitlin Cavarra went 4x5 with and RBI to lead Centenary at the plate, while freshman Kelsey Regan was 2x4 with a run scored. Freshman Rachel Conard (1x3, R), senior Beth Krysiak (1x3) and sophomore Katie Matthews (1x3) each had a hit to total nine for the Ladies.

Centenary spotted SFA two runs in the first inning after three hits and a bases loaded walk.

The Ladies would do damage in the top of the second, taking advantage of several Ladyjack defensive miscues. With one out, Regan singled and Conard drew a walk. A strikeout followed, but freshman Callie Herrington would walk.

A failed pickoff attempt led to Centenary's first run, before Cavarra drove in Conard and Herrington scored on an error by SFA's catcher.

Up 3-2, the Ladies allowed two singles and two sacrifice bunts by SFA, tying the game at 3-3.

Centenary pitchers Sara Dornelas (6.0,9,3,3,2,3) and Lauren Highsmith (2.0,4,1,1,1,2) combined to hold SFA scoreless for the next six innings, while the Ladies were also held without a run.

In the top of the ninth, Centenary had a chance to take the late lead when Regan, Conard and Herrington reached base with two outs, however the Ladyjacks were able to escape with an inning-ending pop out.

SFA plated the winning run in the ninth after a leadoff single, followed by an RBI-double to left field.

Dornelas got the start, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits, while Highsmith was credited with the loss after pitching 2.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits.

SFA's Monika Covington (4.0,4,0,0,1,2) earned the win in relief, after tossing the final 4.0 innings, allowing just four hits.

The Ladyjacks had 13 hits on the game, led by Ashley Struchtemeyer with a 3x4 and the game-winning RBI.

Centenary will take on Central Arkansas tomorrow evening at 5:30 pm at the Centenary Softball Complex.
