Dornelas Earns Second Team All-League Utility Player Honors

ELMHURST, Ill.-Centenary's Sara Dornelas was recognized by the Summit League as a Second Team All-League utility player on Thursday evening voted on by the league's nine head coaches.

Dornelas, a junior from Denton, Texas earned utility honors after finishing the 2010 season as a pitcher and designated player for the Centenary squad. The right-hander wrapped up the season with a 9-22 overall record on the mound and a 4.58 ERA, notching three of her nine wins against Summit League opponents. Dornelas also tossed one complete game in 70.0 innings of work during league contests, while maintaining a perfect fielding percentage.

At the plate, Dornelas hit .250 in conference play with one home run, a game winner against Oakland and drove in six runs on 14 hits. Overall, Dornelas finished second-best on the team with a .266 average.

Headlining the league's top awards was Melissa Chmielewski of North Dakota State, who garnered her second Player of the Year honor after hitting .432 to lead the league. She also slugged .716 and totaled 32 hits, 20 runs and 18 RBI. Overall, she ranks 17th nationally in RBI and 20th in doubles.

Bison teammate Whitney Johnson, who posted 13 wins and a 2.37 ERA with 149 strikeouts and 15 complete games in league play, was named Freshman of the Year.

Pitcher of the Year honors went to IPFW's Courtney Cronin, who leads the league with 11 shutouts, ranking ninth nationally, and totaled 11 victories and 93 strikeouts with a 1.71 ERA in league play.

Western Illinois' Holly Van Vlymen was named Coach of the Year after guiding her team to its second consecutive regular season title with a 19-2 record.
