PREVIEW: Softball to Host Grambling in Home Opener, Tuesday
Monday, March 14, 2011
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary softball team will host Grambling on Tuesday at 6 pm in its 2011 home opener at the Centenary Softball Complex.

The Ladies are coming off a 1-2 weekend where they posted their first win of the season against Summit League foe, IUPUI on Friday. Centenary however dropped Games 2 and 3 of the series, falling to 1-12 on the season.

Centenary is led at the plate by senior Bonnie Matak, who's .267 average, eight hits, three doubles, and three runs paces the Ladies offensively. The lefty belted her first home run of the 2011 season in Friday's win, which later proved to be the game-winner.

Following Matak in average is junior Reggie Salvatore with a .263 clip and freshman Chandelle Scott with a .250 average. Junior Kalyn Harris leads the team with four RBI.

The Ladies are hitting just .160 as a team with 42 hits in 262 at-bats. Centenary is struggling with consistency, having recorded 94 strikeouts to 24 walks.

On the mound, senior Lauren Highsmith has made 10 starts in 13 games. The righty has an ERA of 14.21 and a 1-8 record through 38.0 innings pitched. Freshman Lynsi Unruh has a team-low 11.51 ERA, but is 0-2 on the year.

The pitching staff is allowing opponents a .431 average and has given up 15 homeruns.

Centenary and Grambling have met 28 times all-time. The Ladies own a 27-1 record over the Lady Tigers during that time. The two teams met earlier this season at Grambling as Centenary dropped a 6-0 contest on the road. In that loss, freshmen Nicole Warren (2x4) and Chandelle Scott (2x3) each recorded two hits.

Following Tuesday's contest, Centenary will take on South Dakota State at home on Friday and Saturday in Summit League play. The Ladies will host the Jackrabbits on Friday in a double-header beginning at 4 pm, followed by a single game at Noon on Saturday.
