SHREVEPORT-The Centenary volleyball team played a competitive match, despite falling in three sets to Western Illinois on Friday evening in Summit League action.

The Ladies fell to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play, while the Fighting Leathernecks improved to 3-4 in 2010 and 1-0 among the Summit League.

Centenary dropped set one, 25-20, set two 25-17 and set three 25-12.

In set one, the Ladies saw the lead change 10 times as they took over their first led at 7-6 on a WIU attack error. Junior Jaclyn Lopez put together a solid run for Centenary midway through the set, tallying a kill and two service aces to give the Ladies a 13-11 lead.

However, the Fighting Leathernecks would quickly respond a strong attack offense to eventually regain the lead and maintain the upper hand for the remainder of the set.

Centenary never led in set two, but tied WIU at 17-17 late. Though, the strong offensive game from the Fighting Leathernecks proved to much at the end, as they tallied three kills and took advantage of three errors by the Ladies.

Playing in the final set, WIU racked up 15 kills to the Ladies' three and produced an impressive .312 attack percentage, while forcing Centenary to commit six errors.

Centenary jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but tallied 14 straight points on seven kills to take over the lead at 14-2. The Ladies were never able to gain momentum late in set three, allowing a final kill by WIU to wrap up the first home match of the season.

On the night, Centenary had 20 total kills, led by Hulbirt with 10 and Lopez with five, while junior Caitlin Neese also contributed on the offensive end with 15 assists.

Defensively, Lopez and Neese each paced the Ladies with eight digs, while junior Taylor Gilmour had seven.

WIU out attack Centenary with 39 kills, led by Allison Gilbert with 18 out of 32 attempts. Heather Smith tallied 32 assists and Brooke Stittleburg had 10 digs defensively.
