"Front & Center" w/ Candace Rushing

After a tough overtime loss to future ASC opponent, Mississippi College on the 10th, we were ready for a win. Lucky for us, this past week brought not only one win, but two wins. In a busy week with three games- a Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday game, my team dug deep and found a way to win two of the three.

Tuesday the 14th at LSUS was not what we expected. Although LSUS is only a few miles down Youree Drive, Centenary has never taken the Pilots on in a Fall season since the program began. Last Spring we easily defeated the Pilots 4-0, however this time around was different.

Starting out slow, not completing passes, and not winning balls out of the air proved costly throughout the Tuesday match. From one unnecessary error to another, my teammates and I included, could not get in the flow of the game. Going down one goal was tough to swallow, however getting scored on with under a minute left to play in regulation was even harder to comprehend.

With the final whistle also came disappointment. Head Coach Glenn Evans was at a loss for words. Taking accountability, we knew we were better than what we performed. After an unusually long meeting after the game, we decided to turn things around. Our main goal from that Tuesday afternoon on was to challenge ourselves individually to progress.

Living up to our word, Friday in Tyler, Texas, we walked off of the field with a 1-0 victory. Texas College put up a good fight using their speed, quickness, and skills; however our own attributes were too much to handle. Senior Kortney Causey provided the only goal of the game off of an assist from Sophomore Kelly Fossard early on in the first half. Our possession and composure aided us in our play throughout the game.

Due to dangerous weather conditions, the game was called with a little over 10 minutes left in regulation. Because over seventy-five percent of the game had been played, we were able to take the 1-0 win back to Shreveport with us.

Our final game of the week was played here on Mayo Field under the two o'clock sunshine Sunday afternoon. Millsaps College out of Jackson, Mississippi traveled to us in just a three hour trip. With over thirty players rostered, the Majors walked onto the field immediately intimidating. Regardless, however, senior Kortney Causey came up big with her third goal of the season and her second game winning goal of the week.

Using her pace and skills, Causey found the back of the net in the first half. Along with Causey's great offensive effort was senior Catie Depew's unbeatable defense. Playing as one of our center backs for her fourth starting season, Depew once again remained untouchable. Throughout the entire game we possessed the ball, communicated with one another, and found open looks to the forward's feet giving Millsaps very few goal-scoring opportunities. Finally, we are coming together and making things happen.

Hopefully the strides we have been making as a team will continue as we travel this coming weekend to Itta Bena, Mississippi to take on Mississippi Valley State University on Friday and to Jackson, Mississippi for a Sunday game against Jackson State. Keep us in your thoughts as we hit the road.

Before you go check your facebook, get to know three more of my teammates. I bring you a senior, a sophomore, and a freshman this week. I have had the pleasure of knowing Causey for quite some time now, am enjoying a great friendship with Kelly, and am looking forward to the future with Haley. Each of them brings something special to the table. Until next time...
