Swimming Records Several Top Finishes, Falls at Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.-The Centenary swimming teams opened up their respective seasons on Saturday against Henderson State recording several top finishes despite falling 114-91 on the men's side and 129-75 on the women's side.

On the men's side, Centenary was led by Matthew Pittman who recorded two first place finishes in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:14.36) and the 500 yard freestyle (5:00.57). He was followed by Adam Pennington in second in each of those events with times of 10:22.44 (1000 yard) and 5:02.48 (500 yard).

Also showing well with a top notch finish was Devin Ross in the 50 yard freestyle (21.19), Ross Olivier in the 200 yard backstroke (1:56.43) and John Cefalu in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:16.31).

Teammate Ryne Smith took second behind Cefalu with a time of 2:16.76 (200 yard breast), while Austin Butler garnered second-place honors in the 100 yard freestyle (49.02) and Josh Pena in the 200 yard freestyle (1:47.73). Christopher Sullivan rounded out the top three in the 200 yard butterfly (2:09.28).

In relay action, the Gents earned two second-place finishes in the 400 yard medley featuring Peter Henry, Cefalu, Ross, and Pena with a time of 3:32.74 and the 400 yard freestyle with a team of Pena, Henry, Butler and Ross with a final time of 3:14.20.

On the women's side, Rachel Olson continued to show well with two top-three finishes. Olson captured the 200 yard IM title in 2:11.25 and a second-place finish in the 100 yard freestyle (54.81).

Cassie Cloutet and Lauren Kloepfer each notched two second-place finishes as Cloutet finished runner up in the 200 yard freestyle (1:59.03) and the 200 yard butterfly (2:14.99) and Kloepfer in the 500 yard freestyle (5:30.97) and the 1000 yard freestyle (11:10.73).

Julie Hughes finished third behind Cloutet in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:17.21 and behind Kloepfer in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:43.46. Brittany Wilkens placed second in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:33.72) and Lauren Lassiter earned runner up in the 200 yard backstroke (2:13.82) just ahead of teammate Kate Rivers (2:16.83).

Michelle Gaubert received second-place honors in the 50 yard freestyle (25.93), while Laura Huning took third (26.15).

In relay action, the 400 yard medley relay team of Lassiter, Wilkens, Hayley Schneider, and  Gaubert placed second with a final time of 4:10.49, while the 400 yard freestyle team of Gaubert, Lassiter, Schneider, and Huning also took second in 3:46.20.

Centenary will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Hendrix and Austin College at 2 pm in Haynes Fitness Center.
