Saturday, October 23, 2010
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary volleyball team faced top-seeded IPFW on Friday, but would fall in three straight sets, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 in Summit League action in the Gold Dome.

The Ladies fell to 3-16 overall and 0-11 against league opponents, while IPFW improved to 16-8 and 10-2 in the league.

Centenary tallied 31 kills to the Mastodons 47, led by sophomore Shelby Singleton's nine kill performance and .471 attack percentage. Junior Stevie Kaye also recorded nine kills, while senior Bethany Kern and junior Jaclyn Lopez each had six.

Junior setter Caitlin Neese contributed offensively with 29 assists.

Defensively, the Ladies made 26 digs as Lopez and Kaye each had six.

Over three sets, Centenary committed 19 errors as 10 came in the first set alone. A strong offense by the Mastodons powered them to an 8-1 lead, but late in the set, the Ladies made it a game, taking advantage of several consecutive Mastodon miscues to pull within eight at 19-11.

Despite late kills by Kaye and Singleton, Centenary ran out of time as their early deficit played a key role.

In the second set, Centenary combined for 12 kills, four of which came from Kaye to battle early. Even though the Ladies never gained a lead, Centenary found itself within two at 20-18 after several kills from Kaye and Singleton.

However, the Mastodon offense would prevail in the end with four attacks for points.

The final set played to nine ties and led as late as 15-14. A service ace from Neese and a kill from Kern narrowed it to two, 21-19, but two kills and an error gave IPFW the match-win.

IPFW was led offensively by Mayara Schlindwein with 15 kills and defensively by Jen Milligan with 14 digs.

Centenary will return to action on Saturday evening with a 7 pm contest against Oakland in the Gold Dome.
