Ladies Within Reach, but Fall 3-0 to UMKC
Saturday, November 6, 2010
SHREVEPORT-Playing its best all-around league match of the year, the Centenary volleyball team tested a solid UMKC squad in three sets, but fell 25-20, 25-21, 25-21 on Friday evening in the Gold Dome.

The Ladies record would fall to 3-20 overall and 0-15 in Summit League play, while UMKC would improve to 9-18 and 6-9 against league opponents.

A battle from the beginning, Centenary found itself just eight kills shy of the Kangaroos, notching 30 on the night for a .120 attack percentage to UMKC's .157.

Junior Stevie Kaye tallied a match-best 12 kills on 31 attack chances, while Kern, junior Jaclyn Lopez and sophomore Shelby Singleton each had five.

Freshman setter Bethany Nuttall recorded 16 assists and junior Caitlin Neese added nine.

Defensively, Lopez paced the squad with 14, while Kern would tally 12.

Despite being down the entire first set, Centenary managed to make it interesting when it used three straight points on back-to-back kills from Singleton and freshman Levita Feaster, while a UMKC attacking error made it a 22-18 set. Two final errors by the Ladies would result in a first-set win for the Kangaroos.

In the second set, Centenary held a lead for much of the play, but would allow UMKC to tie the set at 19-19 on four errors. Tied again at 20-20, Centenary would see its early lead slip away for the remainder of the set as the Kangaroos combined to finish on a 4-1 run.

The third and final set was back-and-forth for much of the play, tied as late as 16-16. A strong offensive finish by UMKC allowed them to walk away with the match-win and season-sweep of the Ladies.

Centenary honored its three seniors in Bethany Kern, Bonnie Matak and Michaela Berg prior to the start of the contest.

The Ladies will wrap up its 2010 home schedule on Saturday when it host Southern Utah at 7 pm in the Gold Dome.
