Sunday, November 7, 2010
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary volleyball team would conclude its 2010 home slate with a 3-0 loss to Summit League foe, Southern Utah, on Saturday evening in the Gold Dome.

The Ladies' record would fall to 3-21 and 0-16 in league play as the Thunderbirds improved to 12-14 and 10-6 in The Summit League.

Centenary would play a strong hitting Southern Utah close, but wasn't able to secure a set win, falling 25-21, 25-13, 25-22.

Offensively, junior Stevie Kaye notched 10 kills, while junior Jaclyn Lopez had nine and sophomore Shelby Singleton chipped in with eight. Junior setter Caitlin Neese, off the bench would contribute with 15 assists.

Lopez would make 11 digs defensively to lead the Ladies, as senior Bethany Kern, Kaye and junior Taylor Gilmour would each dig six.

Despite outhitting Southern Utah, .370 to .333 in the opening set, Centenary would give the Thunderbirds 18 successful kills. The score was tied as late as 15-15, but the Thunderbirds would power up for four straight kills to go up 19-15, managing to hold onto the late lead advantage.

Centenary struggled offensively in the second set, committing five errors with only six kills to Southern Utah's 19 kills and two miscues. An early deficit at 6-0 was difficult for the Ladies to overcome even after going on a quick 3-0 run late in the set.

The third and final set played as close as the first set. The Ladies used a 7-1 run to go up 15-10 as Neese notched back-to-back service aces in that effort.

However, a late offensive surge by the visitors gave way to a lead change as Southern Utah took over at 22-21 after consecutive attacking errors. Three final kills would give the Thunderbirds the season sweep and match-win over the Ladies.

Centenary will play its final 2010 matches on the road beginning with North Dakota State on Friday at 7 pm, followed by South Dakota State on Saturday at 7 pm.
