Gymnastics Captures Second at TWU Quad Meet

DENTON, Texas-The Centenary gymnastics team captured second place in the quad meet hosted by Texas Woman's University held on Saturday evening with a team score of 187.525. The Ladies earned victories over Hamline and Winona State, but fell to TWU, who finished first with a 192.450 score.

Second-year head coach Gretchen Goerlitz earned her first win of her coaching career as the Ladies improved to 2-5 on the season.

Centenary had strong performances throughout the evening, but was highlighted by senior Makensie Lant's effort on the Bars and senior Marisa Schneider's performance on Beam.

Lant tied for second on Bars with a 9.700. She was even with TWU's Bethany Larimer and Caroline Hilpisch, while Pioneer Rashonda Cannie took top honors with a 9.775.

Schneider placed second on Beam with a 9.575, behind TWU's Brittany Johnson's 9.650 score.

The Ladies' top performer on Vault was sophomore Christy Martinez with a 9.675 and junior Melody Smith on Floor with a 9.600.

As a team, Centenary scored an event-best 47.725 on Vault, followed by Bars (47.450), Beam (46.375) and Floor (46.025).

Behind TWU and Centenary was Winona State with a 182.600 and Hamline with a 180.575.

Centenary will return home for its final home meet of 2011 when it hosts SEMO on Friday evening at 7 pm in the Gold Dome. The Ladies will honor its senior class as part of Homecoming celebrations.
