DENTON, Texas-The Centenary softball team opened up the 2011 season at the North Texas' Sleep Inn Classic, falling 9-0 to Tennessee Tech in five innings on Friday morning.

The Ladies (0-1) picked up just two hits on the contest, coming of the bats of sophomore Kelsey Regan (1x2) and freshman Nicole Warren (1x3).

Tennessee Tech gained an early advantage when it struck for two runs in the second inning, before scoring seven combined over the third and fourth frames.

The Golden Eagles registered nine hits and forced the Ladies into three defensive errors on the day.

Centenary had an early chance in the top of the first when Warren singled to shortstop with one out. She was followed by a walk from junior Kalyn Harris. With two on, junior Phyllis Hafer was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a final strike out by Tennessee Tech's Holly Thomas allowed the Golden Eagles to escape any threat.

Ladies' right-handed starter, senior Lauren Highsmith (0-1) (4.0,9,9,5,6) got the call for Game 1, but faced a competitive Tennessee Tech lineup, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and six walks through 4.0 innings of work. Highsmith struck out six in 28 batters faced.

Tennessee Tech was led by three players with two knocks each. Thomas (1-0) (5.0,2,0,0,2,9) struck out nine Ladies in 5.0 innings of work.

Centenary will meet Northwestern State tonight at 5:30 pm and will resume play against Big 12 Nebraska tomorrow at 10 am.
