Softball Struggles in Game 2 of Sleep Inn Classic

SHREVEPORT-In the final game of Day 1 of the Sleep Inn Classic, hosted by North Texas, the Centenary softball team struggled to find an answer to the Northwestern State bats, falling 13-2 in six innings.

The Ladies (0-2) were held to four hits through 6.0 innings as senior Bonnie Matak (1x3, R), junior Kalyn Harris (1x3, RBI) and freshmen Nicole Warren (1x3, R) and Chandelle Scott (1x2, RBI) each posted a hit.

Senior right-hander Lauren Highsmith (0-2) (2.1,6,6,6,2,2) suffered her second loss of the day, tossing 2.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits, while fanning two.

In relief was freshman Lynsi Unruh (2.2,6,5,5,3,2) and junior Reggie Salvatore (1.0, 3,2,2,0,0).

The Lady Demons registered 15 hits on the afternoon, while the Ladies struggled defensively, committing three errors.

Northwestern State gained a 4-0 advantage before Centenary put up its first run in the fourth inning when Warren got things going with a leadoff single. The speedster took second and third with a steal and a wild pitch and scored on a single to left field by Scott.

Down 6-1, the Lady Demons would add six more runs to go up 13-1, before the Ladies plated one in the bottom half of the sixth. Matak doubled to right field and would later score on an error off the bat of Harris.

Centenary will face Nebraska at 10 am on Saturday and will wrap up the tournament on Sunday at 3 pm facing host-North Texas.
