Wednesday, August 24, 2011
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary men's soccer team will open the 2011 season with an exhibition game on Saturday at 4 pm at Austin College. With a week of preseason training under their belts, the Gents will test their skills on the field in an unofficial contest against the Roos.

"The exhibition game is an opportunity to measure our progress and identify any major alterations in our development," said head coach David Orr.

The Gents roster 24 players for the 2011 season, which includes 15 returners from a year ago. Nine newcomers join the squad, featuring six freshmen. Centenary will be led by its eight returning seniors in RB Asenime, Ben Barcelona, Jihad Elaydi, Tate McIntyre, Kyle Mehnert, Aaron Bergman, Ryan Christianson, and Marcos Rodriguez. Also back are juniors Spencer Nickerson, Adam Ghaemmaghami, John Seat and goal keeper Robbie Ramirez.

"This team has always had great chemistry. As a coach, you wonder how the newcomers will assimilate to their new teammates and surroundings. Already it is tough to tell a newcomer and returner apart. It's a good group of gentlemen," said Orr.

Orr and assistant coach Dragan Hinic stressed the importance of fitness in the first week of preseason training. No doubt have the Gents experienced much more intense training sessions this season due to the fact that the temperatures haven't dropped below 100 degrees all week.

"Preseason is going well. Battling the intense heat is the difficulty. However, I am pleased with the way our newcomers have transitioned," said Orr.

Centenary was recently selected to finish seventh in the American Southwest Conference preseason poll. The Gents, however, received the second highest number of first-place votes with four nods to their credit. Texas-Tyler was picked to repeat as the ASC champions.

"Our players are humbled by the preseason projections, and they are ready to take on the challenge ahead of them," said Orr.

The Gents record in 2010 was 2-7-2 overall and 1-3-2 in The Summit League, finishing sixth. Centenary returns Second Team All-Summit League performer, defender RB Asenime.

Austin College, an NCAA Division III member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) is located in Sherman, Texas. The Roos are coming off a 6-8-3 overall record and a 2-6-2 conference record in 2010. Austin College finished 11th out of 12 in the final standings a year ago. This matchup will also be the first scheduled contest for the Roos. Centenary holds the all-time record against Austin College, 7-0.
