Volleyball Defeats LeTourneau, 3-1, in ASC Opener

LONGVIEW, Texas—The Centenary volleyball team continued to showcase a strong start to the 2011 season with a 3-1 win over LeTourneau in its ASC opener on Tuesday evening.

The Ladies (4-1, 1-0) picked up their fourth win of the season to improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in ASC play. Centenary grabbed a 25-14 set one win, before dropping set two 25-17. The Ladies battled back to take sets three (25-15) and four (25-17) to win the match.

Centenary powered up a pretty hefty offensive attack, led by junior middle blocker Shelby Singleton with 14 kills. Freshman Brooke Bahlinger tallied nine kills, while senior Jaclyn Lopez and freshman Sarah Sumner added eight successful kills to the mix.

Senior setter Caitlin Neese dished out 22 assists and Bahlinger contributed with two aces.

Defensively, Lopez was tagged with 17 digs, while junior libero Jesi Wilcox made 13 stops and Bahlinger tallied 10 digs for the Ladies.

As a team, Centenary out performed LeTourneau, notching a .241 hitting percentage to the YellowJackets’ .048 percentage. The Ladies forced LeTourneau into 27 errors.

Centenary will return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 when it travels to Belton, Texas to play Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7 pm.
