SHREVEPORT-The Centenary men's swimming team is set to open the 2011 season when it takes on nationally-ranked Stanford in Lafayette, La. on Friday at 6 pm.

The Gents will compete against the Cardinal in preparation for the upcoming season. Centenary and Stanford will meet in a neutral location as part of Stanford's training camp in south Louisiana each year.

"This year we are swimming against Stanford in Lafayette so the swim community in that area can watch a quality college meet in their hometown," said head coach Butch Jordan. "Stanford is coming off a 3rd place finish at last year's NCAAs and they signed probably the best-ever high school swimmer in the country - David Nolan of Hershey, Penn. Many of their swimmers are coming off of competing in the World University Games and Senior Nationals both held in August."

With less than a week of preseason training, the Gents will dive right in against Stanford in hopes of gaining a great deal of experience for the program in this scheduled dual meet.

"We are expecting our guys to be very competitive and race in each event," said Jordan.

Centenary rosters 28 Gents, including 14 returners and five seniors who Jordan and assistant coaches Joe Ferguson and Dustin Myers look to patrol this squad. The Gents welcome back NCAA Division I Summit League 50 Free Champion in senior Devin Ross and return 14 members of the second-place Summit League team at last year's conference championships.

"I always expect our seniors to lead, but there are always some nice surprises from the other guys and we will soon start to see which guys decide to lead," said Jordan. "This Friday will be a nice look into our 2011-12 season."

Centenary will return to the pool on Oct. 1 when it joins forces with the Ladies team to host Centenary's annual Maroon & White Intrasquad in the Fitness Center at 2 pm.
