Wednesday, September 14, 2011
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary men's golf team will open its fall season this weekend when it travels to Delta State's Darrell Foreman Classic on Friday and Saturday at Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, MS.

One round of 18 holes will be played each day, beginning with an 8 am start on Friday and Saturday. The event is free and open to the public.

"We have had a bit of a slow start to our preseason preparation, however with all my new freshmen in strange surroundings and on their own for the first time ever, it's expected," said fourth-year head coach Emlyn Aubrey. "The last couple of days have been better and we are all excited to get tournament golf started."

The Gents join eight teams from across the region on the par 72, 6,616 yard course. Centenary will compete against Belhaven, Blue Mountain College, Delta State, Lindenwood "A", Lindenwood "B", University of Mobile, University of New Orleans, and University of North Alabama.

THE LINEUP
Aubrey has finalized his opening lineup for the first event of the year. Junior Jay Frazier and freshmen Zander Winston, Jamie Gibson, Hank Strickler and Matt Delaney will suit up for Centenary.

"Starting four freshmen will be interesting as they embark on their college career but as I said, they are excited to get started and my main goal for this first week is to keep them as relaxed as possible and just focus on what they have been working on here at home; not the situation they are in," said Aubrey. "I will look to Jay Frazier to be valuable for this first week especially with his experience."

Frazier is the only rostered returner from a year ago. The two-year letterwinner and Minden, La. native competed in all nine tournaments a year ago. He finished the 2011-12 season with an 83.76 stroke average. Frazier notched a career-low 74 in the second round of ORU's Invitational.

Winston hails from Colleyville, Texas and JJ Pearce HS. He played part of the 2009 4A State Championship team and was a two-time All-District performer.

Gibson comes to Centenary from Barnsley, England and Penistone Grammar School. He was part of the Yorkshire Boys Championship team and was the junior captain at Silkstone Golf Club as well as the Club Champion in 2011.

Strickler is a native of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and a graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior HS. He helped his high school team to three conference championships and played a vital role on a team that finished undefeated two straight seasons.

Delaney is a local Shreveport product out of Evangel Christian Academy. He captured six individual titles while in high school and was an All-District and All-State selection.
