Gents Win Home Finale in Thriller Fashion w/ Golden Goal

SHREVEPORT-Junior Spencer Nickerson sank the game-winner on an assist by senior Marcos Rodriguez to propel the Centenary men's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime win over Howard Payne in the 2011 home finale on Saturday evening.

The Gents now ride a four-game win streak as the last three have been shutouts for Centenary. They have also won seven of their last nine contests. Centenary holds an 11-3-1 overall record after the victory and a 9-2-1 record in conference play.

A steady 90 minutes of play passed as both Centenary and Howard Payne held each other scoreless through regulation. It wasn't until the second overtime and 106:36 on the clock that the Gents broke loose for the game-winner.

Rodriguez garnered his team-high sixth assist of the year when he found Nickerson's foot for the win. The junior netted his fifth goal of the year and first golden goal.

Despite a fairly balanced effort across the board, Centenary out shot Howard Payne 22 to 14. Senior Ryan Christianson and Rodriguez each tallied five shots, while Nickerson added three, followed by seniors Jihad Elaydi, Ben Barcelona and RB Asenime contributed with two.

Junior goal keeper Robbie Ramirez made nine saves in goal for the win, collecting his 10th victory and seventh shutout of the year, playing all 106 minutes.

Centenary honored its 14 seniors and one junior foreign exchange student on Senior Night prior to the start of the game.


Centenary will return to play in its final weekend on the road beginning with a trip to UT-Dallas on Thursday fore a 7:30 pm start.
