SHREVEPORT-Centenary men's soccer scoring leader Marcos Rodriguez was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District First Team, voted upon by the Sports Information Directors across the District, announced Friday.

"Marcos is the ideal student-athlete who truly represents what Centenary Gents Soccer is all about," said head coach David Orr. "His commitment to his studies as well as on the field exemplifies what I look for in a student-athlete and he has proven to be the leader we all knew he would be."

Rodriguez, a senior Health and Exercise Science major, represented the Gents both on and off the field during his four-year career. The Mineola, Texas native holds a cumulative 3.83 GPA at Centenary and was the Gents' scoring leader this season, while helping Centenary to an impressive 13-3-1 overall record, its best since 2002 on a final six-game winning streak, which tallied five shutouts.

Represented on the District 8 ballot for NCAA Division III, Rodriguez was named a First Team selection and was one of four midfielders selected to this team across the District.

Helping Centenary to an unofficial best record in the ASC this season at 11-2-1, Rodriguez started 16 of the 17 games and poured in a team-best 21 points on seven goals and seven assists. He managed to lead the team in every offensive category, which included four game-winning goals.

"I thoroughly enjoyed watching Marcos play this year. He is a team leader, a tremendous athlete, and obviously by virtue of his academic achievements, an ideal student. Credit is due to him and to Coach David Orr for creating an atmosphere on his team where excellence is fostered in all its forms," said Centenary Director of Athletics, Dr. William Broussard

Rodriguez joins three other American Southwest Conference players on the First Team as Hardin Simmons' midfielder Matt Pitcock, UT-Dallas defender Mark Brooks, and UT-Tyler forward Victor Almendariz were selected.

Because of his First Team All-District status, Rodriguez will be eligible for selection on the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American team, which will be announced at a later date.
