Wednesday, January 4, 2012

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary gymnastics team prepares to open its season this weekend when it travels north to Michigan to take on Western Michigan on Friday at 5 pm CT and Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Noon CT.

The Ladies will begin their 2012 season on the road for the first six meets, which includes stops in Michigan, Texas, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

Centenary is under first-year head coach Jackie Fain and inherits a squad that returns three seniors in Lauren Carlton, Melody Smith and Stephanie Wright as well as junior NCAA Regional Qualifier as an All-Arounder in Jessica Lieblich.

FAIN ON EXCITEMENT ABOUT SEASON DEBUT
"We are excited to begin our season. The Ladies have worked hard during the fall semester to prepare for this weekend," said Fain. "We have some key routines to replace from last year's graduating seniors, you will see a few new faces in some of the line ups this weekend and we are looking forward to our season debut."

The team is made up of 11 returners that took part in last year's USAG Collegiate Nationals and welcomes six freshmen.

FAIN ON A LOOK AT HER LINEUP
"Our entire line up this week will consist of returners. With this being our first meet of the season, and it being a two-meet weekend as well we will be relying on our upperclassmen's experience and determination to make it a successful outing," said Fain. "I am looking for our seniors and juniors to really step it up and carry a large load for the team this year."

Last year's team produced a 5-17 overall record, which saw wins over Alaska, Hamline, Winona State, and Temple and posted its best team score of 192.575 at Alaska. Centenary returns three Ladies who qualified for Finals at Nationals a year ago in Christy Martinez on Vault, Wright on Bars, and Lieblich as an All-Arounder.

A LOOK AT WESTERN MICHIGAN
Western Michigan will open its season by hosting Centenary on Friday. The Broncos are coming off a third-place finish in the MAC regular and championship series a year ago and return 13 gymnasts.

A LOOK AT CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Central Michigan will also open its season with a quad-meet, hosting Wisconsin-La Crosse, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and the Ladies. Central Michigan is coming off a MAC regular season and championship title in 2011 and returned 18 gymnasts.

FAIN ON OUTLOOK FOR THE WEEKEND
"This weekend is going to be a challenge; but the Ladies are determined to make the best of it. We had a fairly long break and have had limited practice to prepare, but we worked very efficiently this week in the gym," said Fain.

"We are going into both competitions this weekend with our focus on hitting our routines and coming out of the weekend with some good competitive experience to build on for the rest of the season. Having two competitions back to back will be taxing, but these Ladies are fighters and will give it all they have!"

UP NEXT
Centenary will continue its opening-season road tour when it travels to Denton, Texas on Jan. 21 to take on TWU, Oklahoma, and Utah State in a quad-meet hosted by TWU at 7 pm.
