Ladies Show Promise for 2012 in Season Debut Despite Falling to WMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich.-The Centenary gymnastics team opened its 2012 season at Western Michigan as 10 Ladies saw action. Despite falling 186.175 to 191.450, Centenary showed well in each event, while outscoring the Broncos on the Beam.

The Ladies (0-1) grabbed six Top 5 finishes, including an impressive outing on the Beam that led to two Top 3 efforts. Under the direction of first-year head coach Jackie Fain, Centenary used its returning class to lead the way in its season debut.

Centenary opened the evening on Bars, scoring a 44.525 to Western Michigan's 48.675. The Broncos captured the Top 6 places, while the Ladies were led in seventh place by sophomore Robyn Price's 9.550. Taylor Zondervan of WMU placed first with a 9.775.

The Ladies moved to Vault in their second rotation to score a 47.600 to WMU's 48.350. Centenary was led by junior Amanda Holt's 9.770, which landed her a third-place finish. Shelby Pflug of WMU took first with a 9.750.

Following Vault, Centenary took the Floor for its third rotation and scored a team total 47.700 to the Broncos' 48.175. Senior Melody Smith led the way for the Ladies in a second place tie with a score of 9.650. Following her in fifth was junior Jessica Lieblich with a 9.625. Stacy Kramer of WMU captured first with a 9.725.

Centenary wrapped up the evening's event on the Beam, which proved to be its best performance of the evening.

The Ladies notched a 46.350 and outscored the Broncos' 46.250. Sophomore Ciara Maradiaga led the Ladies in second place with a 9.625, followed by junior Meg Crowley in third with a 9.600 and senior Stephanie Wright in fourth with a 9.500.

Lieblich competed as the only All-Arounder for the Ladies, scoring a combined four-event total of 36.500 to finish behind WMU's Cepeda Carter with a 36.800. Lieblich earned a 9.475 on Vault, 8.525 on Bars, 8.875 on Beam, and a 9.625 on Floor.

Centenary will return to the gym on Sunday when it travels to Mount Pleasant, Michigan to take on Central Michigan, Wisconsin-La Crosse, and Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a quad meet held at Noon CT. Live action can be followed at www.cmuchippewas.com.
