SHREVEPORT – Adam Ghaemmaghami tied for a game-high four shots and Centenary poured in 14 total, but the Gents couldn’t find the back of the net as LSUS took the Mayor’s Cup for the second time in as many years, 2-0.

Centenary remains at 0-0 since it was tabbed as an exhibition match. LSUS evens its record at 1-1.

The Gents make their season debut Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. atSchreinerUniversity, following the women’s game slated for 2 p.m. After another road game Sept. 3 at Texas Lutheran, Centenary will make its premier at Mayo Field Sept. 8 against Howard Payne at 8 p.m.

“I have a really good feeling going into our opener after what I saw today,” Gents head coach David Orr said. “I saw some guys looking and learning from mistakes as the game went on. I’m proud of the guys and the effort in their first game and getting an idea of what we’re going to look like.

“One of the promising things we saw was that we had a little more stamina than I was expecting. That’s always good because it allows you to do some more things tactically. I saw some leadership from some seniors step up today and that’s fantastic. And I saw some effort come from some newcomers that we’re really going to need this season.”

Brian McKay scored the game’s first goal in the 41st minute to give LSUS a 1-0 halftime lead. William Awagu pushed the margin to 2-0 just 6:18 later, less than three minutes after the break, assisted by Benito Garcia and Ruben Mendoza.

Centenary pounded 14 total shots, but only two were on goal. LSUS tallied 18 total and five on goal. Centenary’s Spencer Nickerson and Gabriel Zahm had two apiece while six Gents took one.
