Ladies, Gents close out Senior Day with wins over Southwestern

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary swim teams closed out their home slate with wins over Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon at the Fitness Center. The Gents edged out the Pirates 131-128 in the last relay to capture the victory while the Ladies captured the win outscoring SU 120-81.

The men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Austin Butler, Ross Olivier, Andrew Borel and Michael Schwandt logged a time of 1:28.43 to capture the win the men’s side. The victory was the eighth event win on the day for the Gents.

The Ladies captured nine event crowns on the afternoon.

Eight swimmers also closed out their regular season and were honored; Laura Huning, Julie Hughes, Hayley Schneider, Kate Rivers, Olivier, Matthew Pittman, Christopher Sullivan and Schwandt.

Schwandt and Olivier also were on the men’s 200-yard medley relay team along with Pittman and Austin Butler that finished second with a time of 1:39.92. Pittman also finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:18.98.

The Ladies’ 200-yard medley relay team of Michelle Gaubert, Olson, Schneider and Huning posted a time of 1:54.98 to capture the win.

Schneider (2:00.26 – first place) and Kayla Thornhill (2:03.39 – second place) picked up the top two spots in the women’s 200-yard freestyle while Raquel Candal (10:01.77 – first place) and Christy Wolterman (10:18.98 – second place) also picked up first and second finishes in the women’s 1000-yard freestyle.

Borel and Arash Ataei garnered the top two spots in the men’s 200-yard freestyle with Borel taking top honors with a time of 1:50.95. Ataei posted a time of 1:52.50.

Rivers and Hughes closed out the third straight event for the Ladies capturing the top two finishes as Rivers tallied a time of 1:04.68 to win the 100-yard backstroke with Hughes posting a time of 1:07.12.

Olivier, Schwandt and Sullivan took the top three spots in the men’s next event – the 100-yard backstroke. Olivier led the way with a time of 54:26 with Schwandt posting s time of 54.47 in second and Sullivan in third with a time of 59:50.

Olson claimed the women’s 100-yard backstroke crown with a time of 1:12.22.

Huning and Hughes captured first and second respectively in the women’s 200-yard butterfly with Huning posting a time of 2:13.40 followed by Hughes’ time of 2:18.28. Huning also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle behind teammate Schneider (55.45) with a time of 55.76.

Gaubert, Daniela Ruelas and Thornhill followed on the women’s side taking the top three honors in the 50-yard freestyle. Gaubert led the way with a time of 25:98 followed by Ruelas’ time of 26.47 in the second. Thornhill rounded out the three spots with a time of 26.60.

Pittman claimed the men’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.53 while teammates Butler and Olivier each garnered second place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and 50-yard freestyle respectively. Butler posted a time of 1:00.76 with Olivier adding a time of 22.75.

Butler also captured the 100-yard freestyle title with a time of 48.43 while Olivier picked up a victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.30.

Schwandt and Ataei each claimed wins for the Gents helping lead into the final event. Schwandt posted a time of 56.04 in the men’s 100-yard individual medley with Ataie garnering a time of 56.86 in the 100-yard butterfly. Christopher Feazel finished second behind Ataei with a time of 57.51.

Olson added the last victory for the Ladies with a time of 1:04.32 in the 100-yard individual medley.

Colin Baker registered the only points for the Gents in the 500-yard freestyle with a second place finish and time of 5:10.56. Pittman added a third place finish with a time of 2:21.42 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Centenary returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 as participate in the SCAC Championships in Rockwall, Texas.
