CONWAY, Ark. – The Centenary volleyball team dropped its final two matches of the Hendrix Labor Day Tournament to fall to 1-3 to open the season. The Ladies for the second, straight day saw the opening match to five sets, but found themselves on the short end falling 3-2 to Belhaven University. The Maroon and White closed out the afternoon with 3-0 setback to the host Warriors.

“We played hard the whole weekend and Hendrix was just better than us,” said first-year head coach Caley carter. “Sarah Irons was great for us yesterday and Lindsey long was steady all weekend. We had some great defense by Brooke (Bahlinger), Rachel (Perkins) and Chelsea (Petska).”

Sumner and Bahlinger paced the offense on the day. Sumner tallied 15 kills followed by Bahlinger with 14. Perkins added 11 kills on the afternoon. Beth Nuttall totaled 54 assists in the two outings, including a career-high 32 against Belhaven. The Conroe, Texas, native’s previous best came one year ago with 31 assists against LeTourneau.

After jumping out to a 2-0 (25-16, 25-21) in the opener against the Lady Blazers, BU rattled off wins in the following two sets (8-25, 21-25) before claiming a hard fought 15-10 win in the fifth set to claim the match.

In the final match of the tournament, the Warriors jumped out to a two set lead (14-25, 11-25) before fighting off the Ladies in the third set (21-25) to secure the match victory.

Centenary returns to action on Friday, Sept. 6 at the UT-Tyler Invite. The Ladies open with the host Patriots at Noon and face Mary Hardin-Baylor at 4 p.m. The Maroon and White close out the two-day event with matches against Howard Payne (Noon) and East Texas Baptist (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
