2013 Centenary Athletic Hall of Fame Announced
Monday, October 28, 2013

SHREVEPORT, La. – Centenary honors Bob Decker and Cecil Rhodes as the 2013 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees. Longtime Centenary public address announcer Dennis Boddie joins the duo as an honorary athletic letter recipient.

“One of the most popular athletes the school has ever had,” Decker was a two-sport letter winner for the Gents football and basketball teams. A prominent, starting, offensive tackle for the football team, Decker helped lead the Centenary football teams of the mid-1930s to wins over Texas A&M, Texas, TCU, Baylor and Mississippi. In 1934, he played an important role in the Gents 3-0 victory over Baylor by blocking a punt to setup the only score of the game. After his playing career, Decker coached the 1937 Gents freshman football team.

Rhodes was a four-year letterman at Centenary College in men’s basketball and played one season on the Gents baseball team. He played with the 1955-1956 squad that holds the school record for consecutive wins at 16 en route to posting a 20-6 mark. In his four seasons on the hardwood he totaled 300-plus points and pulled down nearly 200 rebounds while helping guide the squad to a 63-42 record. An all-district performer at Fair Park High School, Rhodes was recruited by numerous colleges before casting his lot with his hometown school, Centenary. In his one season on the diamond, he competed for the team lead in homeruns in 1957.

Boddie has served as the Voice of the Gold Dome since 1981. The boisterous, deep voice has brought in-game entertainment and excitement to various events at Centenary, including men’s and women’s basketball games and gymnastics meets in his over 30-year career with the Ladies and Gents.

The Hall of Fame members will be honored during the homecoming festivities Thursday, Oct. 31 through Sunday, Nov. 3.  The trio will be inducted during the Alumni Awards Luncheon at Noon on Friday, Nov. 1 in the Edwin F. Whited Room in Bynum Commons. For more information on the event, contact Saige Solomon at ssolomon@centenary.edu.
