SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Centenary gymnastics team took part in their annual preseason intra-squad on Sunday. The Ladies performed new routines on all four events in a live meet setting.

"I am extremely happy with how the team performed," head coach Jackie Fain said. "We performed eight routines on all four events and did not count a fall from out competitive line-ups, which was one of our pre-season goals.  Meet day is a long day for the team, but the Ladies were able to stay focused and continue strong performances through-out the day. We work hard in practice, but it's a little different in a true meet setting."

The Ladies competed in the order of events they will have at their first meet on Jan. 10 at LSU.  They started the evening on bars, making all six of their competitive routines. The bar team was led by solid scores of 9.7 from both sophomore Stephanie Strickler and senior Robyn Price.

“We are reloading on bars this year after losing four of our competitive routines from last year’s line-up to graduation,” Fain said.  “Our two returners looked great, but we had some key performances from a couple of freshman and sophomores that will be very important to our success as a team later down the road.”

The Ladies moved on to vault, making five out of the six competitive vaults. Once again Price led the team with a 9.85, followed by junior Noel Stubbs and Strickler.

“We have really focused on training for more powerful vaults this fall, and it showed tonight. We definitely had some high-flying Ladies.

“One of the teams’ deepest events this year will be floor,” Fain commented. “We have several veterans on this event, but some really great routines coming from the freshman too. The Ladies are going to have to compete for a spot in the line-up each and every week, which will make us a better team.”

Highlights on floor came from Price, Strickler and freshman Jordan Anderson, all with 9.75.

The Ladies were led by the veterans once again on beam.

“We were aggressive competing on beam, and that's something I have been asking for in practice," Fain commented. "They did not hold back, and I was happy with that. We are also very deep on this event" Leading the way on beam was sophomore Kellie Slater with a 9.75 followed by Price with another 9.7.

"I am really excited overall with tonight’s meet," Fain said. "This is definitely the most consistent intra-squad we have had in my three years here. We are further along on floor and beam than we have ever been at this point in the season.  We have some work to do on bars, but the team is pushing hard to bring those routines up to par. We now have to focus on the details with form and on landings."

The Ladies are coming off a third place national finish in their 2013 campaign. They will host their last pre-season, intra-squad at the Gold Dome on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m., which is open to the public.
