Swimmers fall at Trinity and Southwestern

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Centenary swimming teams fell this weekend in a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference meets at Trinity University and Southwestern University. The Ladies fell 172-60 against Trinity and 123-108 at Southwestern. The Gents were topped 150-89 in against the Tigers and fell 137-95 against Southwestern.

Rachel Olson and Austin Butler continue to pace the squads as the duo combined for 10 event titles during the weekend. Both swimmers picked up wins in the 200-yard free relay at both meets. Olson teamed with Chelsea Russell, Michelle Gaubert and Kayla Thornhill for the two victories. The squad posted a time of 1:45.53 at Trinity and followed with a winning time of 1:44.18 at SU.

Butler teamed up with Mitchell Foster, Beau Montgomery and Andrewn Borel for a winning time of 1:30.81 against the Tigers on Friday. Arash Ataei joined Mongtomery, Foster and Butler for the same event against Southwestern and posted a time of 1:31.04.

Olson logged wins in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.98) at Trinity and in the 100-yard freestyle (56.35) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.63) at Southwestern.

Butler secured an event title in the 50-yard freestyle at Trinity (22.19) and the 50-yard backstroke (25.78) and the 100-yard individual medley (55.16) at Southwestern.

Borel finished second behind Butler in the 50-yard backstroke (26.28) while Ataei and Erik Norem finished second and third respectively behind Butler in the 100-yard IM with times of 1:00.72 and 1:01.55.

Along with team wins in the women’s 200-yard freestyle, Russell picked up two wins at Southwestern in the 50-yard backstroke (30.44) and 100-yard butterfly (1:03.91).

Ashley Giffen earned an event win in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.78) and finished second behind Russell in the 50-yard backstroke (30.71) at SU on Saturday.

Gaubert claimed an event victory in the 50-yard freestyle at Southwestern with a time of 26.01 to conclude the event wins for the Ladies over the weekend.

The Gents took the top three spots in the 50-yard butterfly on Saturday. Montgomery clinched the win posting a time of 24.65. Cameron Brando and Juan Tapia finished second and third respectively with times of 26.31 and 27.73.

Centenary returns to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 25 as they host Austin College at 2 p.m.
