LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Centenary volleyball team was one of 676 teams across the nation to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 season. The Ladies which posted a 3.60 grade point average in the classroom are one of 126 Division III teams to earn the accolade.

“Academically, our goal is for all players to maintain a 3.0 or above GPA.  This year, we had three players maintain a 4.0 both semesters: Brooke Bahlinger, Beth Nuttall, and Rachel Perkins, with Chelsea Petska adding to that for the spring semester.  With the majority of our team being pre-med/biology majors that is asking quite a lot, but we have a group of players who are very good at prioritizing schoolwork and holding each other accountable,” said head coach Caley Carter. “We take pride in the fact that our players are able to maintain excellent relationships with open doors of communication with our Centenary community of professors and academic supporters- especially during volleyball season as the demands of collegiate athletics add interesting challenges to a student’s class load.”

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average.

Centenary is one of five programs from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference to earn the honor. The Maroon and White are joined by fellow SCAC members Colorado College, Schreiner, Southwestern and Trinity.

The 676 is a new high for the award as is the 126 in Division III. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 676.

The AVCA Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA's fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's 22-year history, with exactly 6,126 awards been given out in total.
