SHERMAN, Texas – A 3-1 victory over Dallas Christian gave the Centenary volleyball team a split in the opening day of the Austin College Invitational. The Ladies (1-1) fell 3-0 to McMurry in their opening match of the day.

Rachel Perkins led the Maroon and White’s offensive attack with 29 kills for the two matches. Freshman Desiree Frey added 23 kills on the day with Lindsey Long providing 18 kills. Freshman Allison Lazewski dished out 73 assists in the pair of the contests.

Freshman Haley Cubberly led the defensive effort with 19 digs while Perkins provided 14. Frey and Chelsea Petska each tabbed in 10.

Centenary out-hit the opposition for the night posting a 20.4 attack percentage compared to the 16.5 by MCM and DCC.

A deadlock in the first two sets in the night cap of the invite, the Ladies wrapped up the final two sets 25-21, 25-16 to gain their first win of the season. Centenary gathered a combined 24 kills during the final two sets en route to the victory. The Maroon and White posted 17 kills in the opening set of the match recording a 53.8-attack percentage to pick up the 25-13 win.

Perkins posted a career-high 18 of kills in the four-set victory with Frey adding 13 and Long tabbing in 11 – one shy of tying her career-high. Lazewski supplied 43 assists with Cubberly gathering 13 digs.

A strong offensive effort wasn’t enough to gather a season-opening win for the Ladies despite falling 25-17, 25-23, 25-21. Perkins and Frey each provided double-digit kills respectively with 10 coming from Perkins and 10 from Frey. Lazewski posted 30 assists.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Noon against Sul Ross State. The Ladies close out the Austin College Invitational at 2 p.m. against Huston-Tillotson.
