SHREVEPORT, LA – The Ladies volleyball team tallied key serves and blocks as Centenary College (1-0) defeated Jarvis Christian (0-1) 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20 Tuesday night, September 1.

"Overall, I'm pleased with our performance tonight. There were moments you could tell where we're young, but also moments of good, clean volleyball," said head coach Caley Carter.

After the Ladies dropped the third set and were tied with the Bulldogs at 19 in the fourth set, freshman Hailey Lawson came up big from the service line. Classmate Makenzie Shaw recorded the kill to bring Lawson to serve. Lawson, who recorded four-straight aces in the first set, tallied a pair of aces around a Jarvis Christian attack error and senior Lindsey Bruce’s solo block to force match point. A solo block by Jarvis Christian extended the match, but Lawson ended the night with a kill on senior Rachel Perkins’ 15th assist of the match.

Besides the six aces, Lawson added a match-best 14 digs while also adding nine kills and two blocks. Sophomore Allison Lazewski contributed 25 assists, just three less than Jarvis Christian recorded as a team. Senior Lindsey Long added six blocks.

"Hailey was our best player tonight. She hit almost .300, led the team in aces and digs, and was our best passer," said Carter. "I was also happy to see some decent blocking numbers, led by Lindsey Long."

With the Ladies down 10-6 in set one, a service error put Lawson on serve. She tallied four-straight aces, the first of six for the Maroon and White in the set, to finish off an 8-1 run. Centenary led 20-18 before two Bulldog errors and a Lazewski ace opened up a five-point lead. Four sideouts gave Centenary set one.

Jarvis Christian hit negative in the second set as Centenary took a 2-0 lead. With the Ladies down 14-13, sophomore Desiree Frey – who led all hitters with 12 kills – tied the set in one swing. After a Jarvis Christian mistake, a kill from freshman Ashley Brown and a Lazewski ace put Centenary up 17-14. Four points off Perkins gave Centenary the set by eight points.

The Ladies looked like they would end the match in straight sets, but the Bulldogs ended the third with 6-of-7 points to extend the night, 25-23.

Leading Jarvis Christian was Averis Johnson, who tallied a double-double by leading the team with 14 assists and 12 digs. Talicia Lang added 11 digs and nine kills.

The volleyball team returns to action this weekend at the Austin College Tournament. The Ladies begin their four-match in two days swing against McMurry September 4 at 4 p.m.
